Anti-piracy raid smashes Dutch counterfeit operation - 11 January 2001

Hoofddorp, The Netherlands, - Content protection and management company Irdeto Access and CanalPlus Nederland, the pay-TV operator, stepped up the pressure on organised pay-media piracy with a pre-Christmas raid that seized counterfeit smart cards.

Accompanied by a Dutch bailiff, investigators swooped on the premises of two piracy operations in Axel and Uden, seizing computers and other hardware used to manufacture counterfeit smart cards.

Investigators found counterfeit Canal Plus and Irdeto Access smart cards on the premises. Court notices were served on several alleged counterfeiters, who are scheduled to appear in court this month.

The operation, a civil action under Dutch law, was organised by CanalPlus Nederland and Irdeto Access.

“Once again, we have served notice on the pirates that their actions will not be tolerated,” said Andrew Curle, Irdeto Access special projects manager and leader of the company’s anti-piracy operations. “Pay-media piracy costs the industry an estimated $250-million annually in Europe alone. We are determined to hold accountable those generating illegal revenues through the theft and unauthorised use of valuable content.”

The pre-Christmas raid in the Netherlands represents just one strand of Irdeto Access’ global campaign against piracy. Irdeto Access has a three-prong approach to the industry-wide problem of piracy, using advanced encryption technology, extensive investigation of suspected fraud and counterfeit operations, and close co-operation with international bodies.

In November, Irdeto Access initiated court proceedings against an alleged pay-media pirate in Oxfordshire, England. The company has closed down scores of web sites advertising counterfeit smart cards, and has its sights on several other illegal operations in the UK, Europe and internationally. It was Irdeto Access investigative work that helped to track, capture and prosecute the internationally-operating smart card pirate Mad Max in Thailand in 1998.

“Piracy is a fundamental issue for the broadcast and content industries and it is only with tangible actions from companies like Irdeto Access that the subject is receiving the attention it deserves,” said Graham Kill, Irdeto Access CEO. “Investors will not pay for the creation and development of valuable content, or for the broadcast and IP networks that distribute it, unless the content can be protected and the integrity of these networks secured, as those businesses are dependent on the protection of that content for their revenues.”

Around 25 million smart cards currently protect global content revenues of around £2.5-billion annually, with the market growing at 20% per year.

Irdeto Access, a founder member of the European Association Against Pay-Media Piracy (AEPOC), has a long track record of success against smart card pirates and hackers, and was among companies that successfully lobbied the EU to issue its anti-piracy directive this year.

“Apart from staying ahead of the technology curve to prevent theft of valuable content, the ability to investigate piracy and to instigate prosecutions when it is uncovered are essential tools for companies like Irdeto Access and our customers,” anti-piracy chief Mr Curle said.

Irdeto Access close down user groups trading in encryption hacking techniques - 6 March 2001

Hoofddorp, The Netherlands, - Irdeto Access announced today that following requests, 13 user group websites trading in techniques and information which would allow group members to bypass conditional access technologies have been closed down

Irdeto Access, a Mindport conditional access company and subsidiary of international television, Internet and interactive technology group MIH Limited (Nasdaq & AEX: MIHL), identified one of the Yahoo! user group sites as part of its undercover anti-piracy operations. A large part of these investigations are undertaken on the Internet as this is the chosen medium of most pirates for selling illegal smartcards and sharing information with other underground pirates.

Irdeto Access’ team was then able to track down a further 12 sites which had the aim of exchanging information to enable the circumventing of encryption techniques adopted by satellite broadcasters, or to use the original words of one group: "How to watch encrypted channels for FREE". This is a criminal offence under Sections 296 and 297A of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988.

Irdeto Access was keen to discuss its findings with Yahoo! and notified them as to the existence and suspected activity of these sites via e-mail. Yahoo!’s Abuse staff reviewed the groups outlined by Irdeto Access and subsequently deactivated them.

Graham Kill, CEO of Irdeto Access, commented: “The message we are sending out to pirates today is that we will find them, whatever activity they are undertaking and wherever they are pursuing it. Whatever the scale of their operation, we have given notice to local and international pirates that their illegal actions will not be tolerated.”

Irdeto Access, a founder member of the European Association Against Piracy (AEPOC), has a long track record of success against smart card pirates and hackers, and was among companies that successfully lobbied the EU to issue its anti-piracy directive last year.

Irdeto Access has a three-prong approach to the industry-wide problem of piracy, using advanced encryption technology, extensive investigation of suspected fraud and counterfeit operations, and close co-operation with international bodies.

“Besides having the technology to protect and manage content, the ability to investigate piracy and then act on information uncovered is an essential tool for companies like Irdeto Access,” Mr Kill said.
