Irdeto wins counterfeit claim against dealer

Encryption company Irdeto Access has won a prosecution case against a Manchester based satellite trader Mr Altikrity of Digital Supervision, on the grounds of producing and supplying counterfeit pay-TV smartcards. Digital Supervision's advertisements in "What Satellite TV" magazine contained promotions relating to "Italian, Greek and Dutch cards", and after an investigation by Irdeto Access, these cards were found to be unofficial. Legal action was carried out by DLA on behalf of Irdeto, where Mr Altikrity was convicted of two offenses of supplying counterfeit smartcards - a breach of section 297A to the amended Copyright Designs and Patents Act 1988. He received a £1000 fine and was made to contribute towards Irdeto's escalating legal costs. Irdeto Access boasts of a 100 per cent success rate in prosecuting counterfeit smartcard vendors in the United Kingdom, and in a recent press interview Irdeto's CEO Graham Kill stated "Our customers expect us and depend on us to protect their content, so the result of this case is a great win for both our customers as well as for Irdeto Access."
