swapfile aangemaakt en wat dan??

Ik heb via het menu van gemini 4.6 een swapfile aangemaakt op mijn usb stick groot 128Mb

De storage location is /media/usb (kan dit alleen kiezen en niet wijzigen.
Daarna het kruisje enable/disable geset en na een minuut of twee de melding file available
SWAP activate(128M)

En toen wat kan ik hiermee verder.

Wanneer wordt er iets naar die swapfile geschreven ?? Als mijn lokaaal geheugen verspijkerd is? Of kan ik iets dwingend naar deze file laten installeren?

Bij commando free zie ik dat ik (nog) genoeg lokaal ram heb 21 Mb en in mijn USB SWAP nog alles tot mijn beschikkig heb.

Info over SWAPFILE.

A microprocessor to work does need physical memory, for the dreambox 7020 we have 64MB of physical memory.

If this memory becomes full... the processor can crash and stop working..... your dreambox HANGS or reboot....

Therefor in microprocessor technology there is a way to say .... after the physical memory becomes full you can use a file on disk to be part of your memory capacity...... the file is the SWAPFILE .... like for the microsoft OS does we have a hidden file called PAGEFILE.SYS that is the swap area for windows.
SWAPFILES can be configured to be on any disk devices, here for the dream you can use your harddisk(not recommended) your CF card or your USB Memory stick.

So this topic describe how to create a swapfile of 32MB and make it active for your dreambox.
This means you add 32MB of disk MEMORY that your processor can use and it can be use once the physical memory is full.

I have focus on the GEMINI image but for sure this can be valid for others too.

More you install add-ins, softcams, etc... more you use physical memory... WEET NIET
Just follow the information in the first message of this topic to activate it on your dreambox.

One other TIPS... The GEMINI team says with release 3.40... when booting from a USB stick,HDD or CF, you should configure a swapfile of at least 16MB by default.

Uitstekend verhaal en erg duidelijk de swapfile wordt pas aangesproken wanneer mijn fysiek memory dreigt op te raken.
Dus, omdat ik nog ruim 22 Mb geheugen over heb , heb ik voorlopig niks aan een swapfile.

Scheelt weer een USB stick, PCMCIA kaart heb ik er ook al afgemieterd , heb de keuze van mijn favoriete image gewoon in de Flash gezet.

Ik gebruik mijn cf hier voor.
Een usb stick "hoort eigenlijk bij die andere topic" krijg ik er niet in omdat mijn netwerk stekker in de weg zit.

Dan heb je wel een dikke usb stick. Ik had zelfs een oude redelijk grote 64 mb stick die nog gewoon naast de netwerkstekker pastte.

Maar een CF is inderdaad ook erg handig daarvoor. Maar hoofdzakelijk voor een 7000 dan want ik ben nog geen situatie tegen gekomen waar je de swap bij een 7020 nodig had, die heb ik dan ook nog niet eens aangemaakt.
