G`Day,

Dream Multimedia vs NDS, could this be the end of the Dream Box as we know it?

The following text (translated) makes interesting reading......

Quote:
NDS, manufacturer of coding systems for DVB systems thwart linux set-top-box manufacturer Dream Multimedia.

The end of last year NDS contacted Dream multimedia with the request to close the open source software and to remove the network connection from their products.

NDS has now gone to the President of ETSI (European organisation for standardisation of information and communication technologies) a considerable step further and now ETSI refuses a CSA (Common Scrambling Algorithm) licence to Dream multimedia.

NDS have an unhealthily large finger in the pie at ETSI and can therefore ensure that a licence is entirely (wrongfully?) refused.

It is unfortunate that a manufacturer must obtain from the ETSI a licence to impliment the CSA encryption. This implementation is necessary for a receiver to let it work under the DVB standard. Without ETSI licence there is no authorisation for use of this source code and the implementation of
the CSA.

IBM, manufacturer of the processors from the DM7000, DM5620, DM500 and DM7020 may under pressure from NDS not be able to sell any processor to Dream multimedia. This is because they dont have a ETSI licence anymore.

The same problem me arises with the manufacturer of the (new) processors who Dream multimedia will use in the coming models DM7025 and DM8000. This is of course an outrageous development and a slap in the face of the open source community.

According to Dream multimedia ETSI can not refuse Dream multimedia a licence, on the basis of that they donot forfill the requirements and all ETSI conditions.

Unquote.

Well if they (Dream Multimedia) does not get this problem sorted out with NDS, the present ?Dreamboxes? will become a gold-mine to their owners!!!!.
