avi to vcd/dvd guide:
Step One
First of decide which avi movie you want to convert then fire up DivFix. Now click File >> Open and slect the file you want to convert.
Next click on strip index, wait for it to do it then click rebuild index making sure the cut out bad parts and keep original file check boxes are ticked.
Once complete it will create a file called DivFix.name_of_movie.avi
I would recomend do this even if you have no problems playing the file on the computer becuase there are some errors and problems that your computer can ignore but will cause problems when encoding or during playback on your dvd player.
Ok now you should have a perfect error free avi file ready for encoding, lets move on
Step Two
Ok fire up TMPGenc and the wizard should start.
Select the kind of disc you want to create from the list show (in this tutorial im going to show how to make a PAL VCD but it is exactly the same for NTSC and dvds) in my case a PAL VCD and click next
Click the Browse button next to the video file box and select the DivFixed file that you want to encode and click Open and the file will apear in the video file and audio file box. Click Next
Now if you like you can have a look at the noise reduction settings if the original avi is not of the best quality but in most cases its not needed. Im not going to go into it at in this version, i may cover it in a later version.
Click on the Other Settings button and click on the advanced tab. Now in the drop down box next to video arrange method select Fullscreen (keep aspect ratio) and then click OK as this all you need to do here. Now click Next to goto stage 4 of the wizard
all you need to do here is select Unknown Media from the drop down box and then click next
Ok now for the last step of the wizard. Just check the output file is going were you want it and that the start encoding check box is ticked then click OK
Click ok in the popup that appears and the file will start encoding!
Now all you need to do is wait, the encoding process can take anything from an hour to 10 hours depending on the speed of the machine, the length of the movie and the type of disk your creating.
Go make a brew, smoke a spliff, shag the misses, go to bed or whatever you fancy doing to kill the time
Ok so your movies encoded and your ready for the next step
Step Three
Ok now we have one large MPEG file that is in the MPEG format for your chosen disk
*NOTE* If you made a dvd mpeg file Skip this step as this only applys to VCDs
Now you need to fire up Easy Video Splitter so that you can split the file into chunks that will fit onto a VCD.
A 700mb cd-r can hold aboout 74mins of VCD quality MPEG so you need to decide how you want to split the file.
Movies up to 2hours 20mins should fit on 2 disks and anything over that will need 3, so here is what you do. the best way to decide is to take the length of the film in minutes and devide it by 70, what ever the answer is round it up to the next whole number for example a 2 hour film is 120 mins 120/70 = 1.714 so rounded up the next whole number is 2 so you will need 2 disks.
OK here we go
Lets say the film is 2 hours long so your going to need 2 disks
Click the little open folder icon on the end of the source file box
change the save directory to were ever you want to save the files to
Now check the split the source file automaticlly option
now you have 3 options, check the Split into and then enter the number of chunks you want the file splitting into, into the box next to it, in this case 2
Click the green tick and the program will place the cut points in place on the movie timeline
Now click Split and wait for it to split the file
It will name the 2 files it creates file_name1.avi and file_name2.avi
Ok thats it, now all you need to do is use you fave burning software to create the vcds using these files. im not going to tell you how to do this as all burning software is different but most have vcd/dvd wizards that are very easy to follow.
I hope you find this helpfull and give it a try.
