Waarschuwing Gemini 4.3 schakelt clonen uit (wist de bootloader)!!!

Hehe was even leuk.... In v4.3 hebben ze het blue panel geblokkeerd voor chinese dreamboxen (de zg. gekloonde dreamboxen). Beveiliging werd via MAC adres gedaan. We hebben echter gehoord dat de eerste patch om dat te omzeilen alweer gereed is. De patch gaat via een klein bestand (init) waar in het MAC adres van de chinese dreambox als het ware wordt veranderd.
 
Yep mac-changer heet dat geval, nota bene gebouwd op IHAD ( LOL ).

Dat geeft dus wel aan dat Gemini de kant heeft gekozen van Dream Multimedia, tegen de Chinese Dreamboxen, die overigens al een tijdje een eigen naam hebben, ondanks dat het natuurlijk clonen blijven.

Dat werpt nu wel de vraag op of het Gemini Team misschien niet iets met Dream Multimedia te maken heeft, want een echte hobbyclub bemoeit zich niet vlug met zakelijke geschillen.

Daarnaast is het een nogal stomme zet van Gemini. Dat zo'n mac-adres fix snel geregeld is, hadden ze namelijk kunnen weten en het is nogal erg naief om te denken dat dit echt iets zou tegenhouden.
In elk geval zeker de Chinese productie niet.

With the release of the GP 4.3, we have added a feature to the Blue panel to detect fake Dreambox clones. We want to show our protest against clones and replicas of Dreamboxes. It cannot be in our interest, to allow the fake boxes to hard the big dreambox community and in fact our beloved hobby.
Like some of you should know, some weeks ago a new box came to the market. It’s sold as a completely new development.
But if you check that box exactly, you will soon find out that not only the same images, software and drivers were used, but also the nearly identical hardware, such as for example in the Dreambox DM500. According to some owners of this new box, it is being shipped and sold with a preinstalled Gemini Image, which is not in our interest. Even in the manufacturers forum, Gemini images where posted with a warning “runs only on Box XYZ”.

We as a Dreambox board and Developer of the Gemini Images can’t tolerate this trend. It is not in our interest that our know-how, our knowledge of the Dreamboxes, and our time is used by a third party manufactorer to sell his copies with our software

In fact, the truth is that these manufactorers are themselves not able to provide a self developed image for their receivers.

The Blue Panel server is operated, managed and financed by private funds. Also the support we offer for the Gemini images and the genuine Dreamboxes is exploited by the fake clone developers and owners.

We can not prevent these people from using the Gemini images, but what we can do is making it as hard as possible for these people to gain money with our work. Therefore, we implemented in the images that are also running on the boxes described above a lock for the BluePanel server. The detection mechanism, whether it is a replica or a Dreambox, has been activated in the current DM500 release. Other Box types will follow. If a box is identified as a non-genuine clone of a Dreambox, the access to the BluePanel is locked.
Since this method of detection is still very new, it could unfortunately occur that even genuine boxes are identified as fakes and as a consequence the BluePanel would be locked also on original Dreamboxes. In the meantime, there are some known problems where repaired boxes can’t by recognized as genuine due to the replaced hardware parts. We will do everything the reduce the number of false identifications but nevertheless we cannot decrease the error rate to zero, as the necessary data from DMM is not available. If your Box is falsely identified as a fake box, please understand that we do this in order to maintain the Dreambox community.

We ask all users of our images to do everything possible to ensure that our hobby can live on and we will fight together against such unfair methods. We as developers want our Gemini images only to run on Dreamboxes...

Het is natuurlijk wel vervelend als fabrikanten dozen standaard met Gemini firmware gaan uitbrengen, maar "as hard as possible" is zo'n check echt bij zeer lange na niet, dan moeten ze echt met iets beters komen.
Gemini is wel wat meer de legalere toer op, da's hun goed recht, maar het blijft naief hoe ze denken de boel te beveiligen op dit moment.
 
Ik geloof niet dat ze helemaal wijs zijn... Wat een flauwekul om beperkingen op te leggen aan je gebruikers en dan met zo'n excuus aan te komen. (schofterig!) Misschien moet iemand hen er aan herinneren dat ze zelf ook meewerken aan illegale activiteiten.
Het draait allemaal om geld en vermoedelijk vooral voor het Gemini Team zelf. Je vraagt je af wat voor deals ze hebben.

Voor mij is het duidelijk. Als ze hier mee doorgaan stap ik over. Ik was absoluut een fan van gemini maar dit soort gedrag accepteer ik niet! What's next... je box vernielen?

Hier dacht ik eerst ook aan, maar dat argument heb ik niet genoemd omdat het niet klopt. Alternatieve firmware maken is niet per definitie illegaal.
Verder heeft het Gemini Team geen key downloader aan boord. Ze zijn dus in principe legaal bezig.

Maar ik accepteer dat ook niet. Zoals gezegd, dat ze niet blij zijn dat hun firmware standaard met die receivers geshipped worden, oke, kan ik in komen, maar je naait er de fabrikanten niet mee, die nemen gewoon een ander image. De hobbyisten die zo'n doos aanschaffen naai je er uiteindelijk wel mee, vandaar dat ik het ook een waardeloze actie vindt, buiten dan de reeds genoemde naieviteit dat ze het idee hebben dat zo'n waardeloze bescherming ook maar iets teweeg zou kunnen brengen, buiten een hoop protesten van gebruikers.
 
Is gewoon vleierij richting Fabrikant hopend op een van de eerste nieuwe boxen "gratis" natuurlijk tbv software ontwikkeling.

Deze image kan op elke DM 500 (leegaal of kloon) gezet worden
Our clone box recognition mechanism caused large waves in the last days and many opinions have been told to us. On the one hand there have been the enraged owners of clone, who had to install their addons manually now without Blue panel. Then there have been the people who simply did not understand Linux and the GPL and accused us of GPL-breach. Also a financial dependence or support from Dream Multimedia and or sponsors was subordinated to us.

On the other hand there have been over 1500 users of our forum who singned our explanation.

All in all our action was accepted very positively and we achieved our intended goal to give an impulse the owners of clone boxes. There have also been cases in which people who thought they owned a genuine Dreambox noticed because of this action that they are owners of a clone box. Too our own surprise according to unconfirmed messages, now one of the manufacturer changed over to supply their own images.

Recapitulatory we note, it was never our intention to insert a waterproof recognition and to get in a Cat-and-mouse game between us and the box manufacturer. Our intension was to push a general discussion to create a consciousness on the clone and reproduction problem and to disasociate us from the clones, too. In the context of our possibilities as image developer we have used the one and only available possibility to make our point of view clear. As image-developer we have absolutly no influence on sponsors, dealers or Dream Multimedia. Our influence on the persons and companies involved in this relationship is very limited and lacked also on support from some places. In any case we get attention on our displeasure and we did not send newsletters of our sponsors containing information about clones. We will keep this in the future.

As we all are Dreambox fans we would like to say clearly, that it is in the exclusive responsibility of Dreammultimedia to proceed against clones. Only DMM has the possibilities (e.g. legal) which might be the only effective method against clones.

For us as Gemini developer and operators of the IHAD this action is now finished. With the upcoming release 4.3.1 of the Gemini Project the clone recognition will be deactivated. We nevertheless ask everyone to use its influence to proceed against clones.

Changes to 4.3.0
* Pictures (JPEG, BMP, GIF und PNG) can now be displayed on the Dreambox 500
* Fix of the EPG display in the overview when there are mutiple languages in the EPG

This MaxVar Image is only running in flash (it has been only tested that way). Please do only use DreamUp and don´t forget the flash erase. Do not use other tools like FW or DCC.

Gelukkig, wat teveel protesten gehad en ze zijn tot inkeer gekomen. Dat van "het was de bedoeling om een discussie te starten" wuif ik persoonlijk echt van de hand, want zelfs met discussie hou je die fabrikanten toch niet tegen.

Het enige goede punt is dat wellicht wat mensen die dachten een originele box te hebben, nu er achter zijn gekomen dat ze bedondert zijn door de handelaar en een clone blijken te bezitten. Maar dat was hun opzet niet.
Ik geloof dus niets van het hele verhaal wat ze ophangen, maar oke, ze stoppen weer met die onzin en da's goed nieuws.
 
Beste clonebezitters.

Het bovenstaande is NIET van de baan met de 4.3.1, erger nog, je box gaat helemaal dood.
Er zijn al diverse 500 clones met de 4.3.1. er op, dan krijg je een melding en daarna doet de doos NIETS meer, reageert zelfs niet meer op de seriele nullmodemkabel.

Er zal wel iets niets pluis zijn want kreeg ook mail van d.i.v forums alwelhoewel ik geen zo,n doos heb. maar waarschuwingen niet in de wind slaan er schijnen al vele zijn met die problemen.

Ik zal het topic even aanpassen en er waarschuwing bij zetten, een kennis van me had twee van die ontvangers en die zijn dus echt gewoon dood.
 
De waarschuwing zal ook aangepast moeten worden. Naar ik lees op I-have-a-Dreambox heeft Gemini inderdaad vanaf de 4.3.1 weer hun clonedetectie er uit gehaald.
Volgens de berichten aldaar heeft Gemini alleen gebruik gemaakt van de nieuwe drivers van Dream Multimedia zelf. De cloneboxen zouden niet met deze drivers overweg kunnen.

Toch geloof ik het verhaal niet helemaal gezien het screenshot wat je bij Satlords kunt zien. Dat is niet iets van een driver of het moet zijn dat Dream Multimedia zich middels de drivers op zo'n manier tegen cloneboxen gaat beschermen.
In dat geval zouden in de toekomst meer images problemen kunnen geven op de cloneboxen als die ook de nieuwe drivers gaan gebruiken.

Ik kan me de werkwijze van Dream Multimedia van de ene kant dan wel voorstellen, maar van de andere kant naaien ze de consument ermee, die is zijn geld kwijt, danwel moet betalen om de flash er opnieuw in te laten zetten.
Dream moet niet de eindgebruiker maar de fabrikant aanpakken, door apparatuur moedwillig stuk te maken om jezelf te beschermen tegen cloneproducten jaag je namelijk wel de consument behoorlijk tegen je in het harnas.

En DM moet zich wel realiseren dat ze echt niet de enige linux ontvanger op de markt zijn en er al diverse bij gekomen die hetzelfde kunnen, danwel zelfs meer kunnen.
 
Mag je opzettelijk (dit is bewijsbaar) wel dingen "kapot" maken met software???
 
er gaat niks kapot ........... een stukje software werkt niet meer.
